I was enticed into this palace of patisserie by a French lady offering me a complimentary taster a few weeks ago. Unable to resist the allure of the French accent, I followed and how glad I am. What I thought was a marshmallowy sickly snack turned out to be an angel of a French patisserie, the Merveilleux.
A meringue base covered in a mountain of delectably light whipped cream of varying flavours, hand-rolled in various coatings. The Merveilleux come in six flavours: chocolate, white chocolate and speculoos, coffee, cherry, praline and caramel. My favourites are the classic Merveilleux with a chocolate cream whipped into heavenly lightness rolled in shavings of real dark chocolate and also the Incroyable, that old favourite speculoos biscuit whipped cream covered in white chocolate shavings… absolutely divine!
The second product (there are only two, like a true specialist!) is a Cramique, a soft brioche which comes in five flavours. On my second visit to the boutique I went with the former product in mind, however I could not resist the chocolate chip brioche fresh out of the oven. Fluffy, chocolatey heaven!
The story is of a French patissier, Frédéric Vaucamps, who wanted to reinvent the traditional French delight from Northern France and add some exciting flavours. He experimented in his patisserie in Lille to the reception of queues of locals every day. I say we Brits are lucky to have this venture on our doorsteps, and a stop off in South Kensington is definitely worth it!
